Caring, Engaging and Smart

Development History

Elder Support Starting from the Community

The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) established the Housing Society Community in 2003, followed by the introduction of services from registered social workers in 2010, and the launch of the Ageing-in-Place Scheme in 2012 respectively, to support the housing, health and social needs of elders in rental estates, facilitating them to age in place.

Building on the success of the Housing Society Community, the Ageing-in-Place Scheme, and social worker services, the Housing Society formed the Caring, Engaging and Smart (CES) team in January 2021. Through providing more comprehensive services, the team facilitates the development of neighbourhood mutual support networks among tenants in rental estates, thereby expanding their social capital.

Service Scope

The CES team endeavours to provide healthcare support, housing and social support services to tenants in estates and to facilitate mutual support within the neighbourhood  to strengthen their social capital and support elders in ageing-in-place.

Health Care Support: Therapeutic groups and activities, e.g. various exercise classes, fall prevention groups, cognitive training, chronic disease management, and physical and mental wellness groups, etc., are organised in estates to promote self-health management and enhance physical and mental wellness of tenants.

Housing Support: To improve home safety for elderly families in need, Occupational Therapists will assess living environments and recommend retrofitting items on home modifications, flat remodelling and prescribe assistive devices. CES also promotes the use of Gerontechnology in estates to enhance convenience of tenants.

Social Support: Great variety of social activities, e.g. interest classes, outdoor activities, exchange activities, festival celebrations and cross-estate activities, etc., are organised to facilitate tenants to broaden their social circles and establish harmonious and joyful atmosphere within the estates.

Mutual Support Network: Thematic neighbourhood mutual support networks, including caregiver support, neighbourhood caring, home living support, health management, mental wellness, intergenerational harmony and sustainable living, are developed based on the unique characteristics and needs of each estate. These networks will continuously be strengthened to serve as a community safety net, enhancing mutual trust and resilience of tenants.
