Housing Society Bagged Top Honours in Eldercare Again

The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) has achieved outstanding results at the 10th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards 2022 organised by Ageing Asia in Singapore, clinching two grand prizes that recognise its outstanding performance in elderly care services, namely the “Operator of the Year – Residential Aged Care” for its Joyous Home of The Tanner Hill and the “Best Dementia Care Programme” for the “Shop and Go Brain Health Workshop”.
 

HKHS Chief Executive Officer James Chan said, “We are delighted and encouraged by the recognition of the Awards for the second year in a row. The Housing Society has endeavored to introduce new services and apply gerontechnology in its elderly housing and Residential Care Home for the Elderly, so as to create a desirable lifestyle and living environment for the seniors. Committed to its role of a ‘Housing Laboratory’, the Housing Society will continue to provide quality housing and services as well as to explore innovative ways in promoting inter-generational harmony and ageing-in-place.”

Joyous Home is a Residential Care Home for the Elderly at The Tanner Hill, offering one-stop services by a team of multi-disciplinary professionals. At Joyous Home, gerontechnology like companion robot and interactive rehabilitation training equipment have been adopted. Besides, a training programme with the theme of five senses (touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste) and two motions (fitness and brain activity) provides diverse training to help the elderly delay physical and cognitive decline.

Co-designed by the HKHS staff members and students of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Year 4, BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences), the “Shop and Go Brain Health Workshop” is a board game tailored for the elderly with the theme of shopping and transportation. The elderly can enjoy interesting and real-life cognitive training through games, which helps them enhance memory, concentration, arithmetic and organising ability so as to reduce the risk of dementia.

Two other projects of HKHS were also shortlisted as finalists in the relevant categories of the Awards, including the “Oh!-Old!-Olympic” programme that was held online and offline for the elderly during the epidemic. It was shortlisted for the “Innovation of the Year – Active Ageing”. In addition, the “Day Day Cookcation”, a programme for the elderly to learn cooking skills from chefs with an aim to achieve self-enhancement and improve quality of life, was shortlisted for the “Innovation of the Year – Social Engagement Programme”.
